DANIEL 8:15 THE VISION AND THE APPEARANCE OF A MAN

Updated: Dec 17, 2022

CHAPTER 15

Daniel 8:1-14 tells us how earthly powers are involved in the war between Christ and Satan. But Daniel 8:15 introduces us to the Mighty Man. The Highest in rank and spiritual power, Who came to bear the sins of the world and to reunite us to the God of heaven. Infinite in righteousness, goodness, and truth, He came with power to withstand principalities and powers and spiritual wickedness in high places. Armed and equipped as Captain of the Lord’s host, He stands at the front in defense of His people as the Mighty Man of God.

Daniel 8:15 And it came to pass, when I, even I Daniel, had seen the vision, and sought for the meaning, then, behold, there stood before me as the appearance of a man.

Please refer to the original Hebrew words present in this verse using the Strong’s Exhaustive Concordance.

And it came to pass, when I, even I Daniel, H1840 had seen H7200 the vision, H2377 and sought H1245 for the meaning, H998 then, behold, there stood H5975 before me as the appearance H4758 of a man. H1397

Daniel is done seeing the vision. The word used for the vision of Daniel 8:1-14 is “chazown”.

VISION H2377

חָזוֹן châzôwn, khaw-zone'; from H2372; a sight (mentally), i.e. a dream, revelation, or oracle:—vision. https://www.blueletterbible.org/lang/lexicon/lexicon.cfm?Strongs=H2377&t=KJV

The vision (chazown) is inclusive of Daniel 8:1-14. Daniel does not understand the meaning of the vision (chazown) but wants to. To help him understand the vision (chazown), Daniel is given the following: “then, behold, there stood before me as the appearance of a man.” The word for man is not just any kind of man. It is a warrior or mighty man. See below from Strong’s.

MAN H1397

גֶּבֶר geber, gheh'-ber; from H1396; properly, a valiant man or warrior; generally, a person simply:—every one, man, × mighty. https://www.blueletterbible.org/lang/Lexicon/Lexicon.cfm?strongs=H1397&t=KJV

Daniel does not use this Hebrew word, geber, translated in the King James Version as “man” ever again in the book of Daniel.

In Daniel 8:15 the word “appearance” is the Hebrew word “mareh”, and is used from this point forward to refer to the vision or appearance of this Mighty Man.

APPEARANCE H4758

מַרְאֶה marʼeh, mar-eh'; from H7200; a view (the act of seeing); also an appearance (the thing seen), whether (real) a shape (especially if handsome, comeliness; often plural the looks), or (mental) a vision:—× apparently, appearance(-reth), × as soon as beautiful(-ly), countenance, fair, favoured, form, goodly, to look (up) on (to), look(-eth), pattern, to see, seem, sight, visage, vision. https://www.blueletterbible.org/lang/Lexicon/Lexicon.cfm?strongs=H4758&t=KJV

In essence, from now on, through the remainder of Daniel chapter eight and chapter nine, Daniel is talking about two different visions: the 2300-day vision (chazown) and the Mighty Man vision (mareh). The Mighty Man vision (mareh) is given to help Daniel understand the 2300-day vision (chazown).

Daniel 8:15 is followed by Daniel 8:16 which translates the Hebrew word “mareh” as vision. Up until now, the Hebrew word “chazown” was also translated vision. Going forward the King James Bible translators did not differentiate but translated both words as “vision.” See below to understand.

Daniel 8:16 And I heard a man's voice between the banks of Ulai, which called, and said, Gabriel, make this man to understand the vision (mareh).https://www.kingjamesbibleonline.org/Daniel-Chapter-8/

And I heard H8085 a man's H120 voice H6963 between the banks of Ulai, H195 which called, H7121 and said, H559Gabriel, H1403 make this H1975 man to understand H995 the vision. H4758

To better understand Daniel 8, it becomes necessary to know which word for vision is being used, and when they are both being used, as in the following verses.

Daniel 8:26 And the vision (mareh) of the evening and the morning which was told is true: wherefore shut thou up the vision (chazown); for it shall be for many days.

27 And I Daniel fainted, and was sick certain days; afterward I rose up, and did the king's business; and I was astonished at the vision (mareh), but none understood it.

After Daniel humbles his heart and prays the prayer of repentance for himself and his people found in Daniel 9, he is given a further explanation of the “mareh” or the appearance of the Mighty Man.

Daniel 9:20 And whiles I was speaking, and praying, and confessing my sin and the sin of my people Israel, and presenting my supplication before the LORD my God for the holy mountain of my God;

21 Yea, whiles I was speaking in prayer, even the man Gabriel, whom I had seen in the vision (chazown) at the beginning, being caused to fly swiftly, touched me about the time of the evening oblation.

22 And he informed me, and talked with me, and said, O Daniel, I am now come forth to give thee skill and understanding.

23 At the beginning of thy supplications the commandment came forth, and I am come to shew thee; for thou art greatly beloved: therefore understand the matter, and consider the vision (mareh).

Daniel 9:24-27 gives a seventy-week explanation of the appearance of the Mighty Man or mareh.

Verse 24 tells us in detail six things the appearance of the Mighty Man would accomplish.

And verses 26 and 27 tell us also that he would confirm the covenant also spoken of by Daniel in Daniel 9:4 during his prayer.

Notice in verse 25 that the seventy-week prophecy or appearance of the Mighty Man begins during the same period which begins the 2300-day vision. The seventy weeks commences with “the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem” which, as we studied under the figure of the Ram in Daniel 8, was facilitated during the reign of the kings of the Medes and the Persians, giving us a significant time reference.

Notice that in the seventieth week the Messiah the Prince would be cut off. In Daniel 9:27 in the midst of the seventieth week the sacrifice and oblation would cease because the Messiah the Prince would complete it by the sacrifice and oblation of Himself for us. This useful knowledge is another significant time reference as to when the seventy-week prophecy occurred. This also confirms that the seventy week prophecy is another “day for a year” prophecy because a lot more than seventy literal weeks happened between the dominating world kingdom of the Medes and Persians and that of the world dominating kingdom of Rome, which is when Christ died on the cross.

Daniel 9:24 Seventy weeks are determined upon thy people and upon thy holy city, to finish the transgression, and to make an end of sins, and to make reconciliation for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal up the vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most Holy.

25 Know therefore and understand, that from the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem unto the Messiah the Prince shall be seven weeks, and threescore and two weeks: the street shall be built again, and the wall, even in troublous times.

26 And after threescore and two weeks shall Messiah be cut off, but not for himself: and the people of the prince that shall come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary; and the end thereof shall be with a flood, and unto the end of the war desolations are determined.

27 And he shall confirm the covenant with many for one week: and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease, and for the overspreading of abominations he shall make it desolate, even until the consummation, and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate. https://www.kingjamesbibleonline.org/Daniel-Chapter-9/

In Daniel 9:25 we are pointed to “the Messiah the Prince” as the appearance of the Mighty Man. The word Messiah means anointed. It is capitalized in reference to Deity.

MESSIAH 4899

מָשִׁיחַ mâshîyach, maw-shee'-akh; from H4886; anointed; usually a consecrated person (as a king, priest, or saint); specifically, the Messiah:—anointed, Messiah.

https://www.blueletterbible.org/lexicon/h4899/kjv/wlc/0-1/

In New Testament scripture the Greek word used for Messiah is Christ. Because of the time prophecies of Daniel 9, the disciples were looking for the Messiah (Christ) to come when Jesus first appeared to John the Baptist.

John 1:41 He first findeth his own brother Simon, and saith unto him, We have found the Messias, which is, being interpreted, the Christ.

https://www.kingjamesbibleonline.org/John-Chapter-1/

In Daniel 9:25 we are pointed to “the Messiah the Prince” as the appearance of the Mighty Man. Jesus is often called the Mighty Man. Comparing scripture with scripture, look at the verses below which make His royalty evident. In addition, He is the Captain of the Lord’s hosts or the Warrior of warriors, known by His name, Michael.

First, let’s start by seeing Him as “Messiah the Prince.”

Matthew 2:1 Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judaea in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem,

2 Saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him.

3 When Herod the king had heard these things, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him.

4 And when he had gathered all the chief priests and scribes of the people together, he demanded of them where Christ should be born.

5 And they said unto him, In Bethlehem of Judaea: for thus it is written by the prophet,

6 And thou Bethlehem, in the land of Juda, art not the least among the princes of Juda: for out of thee shall come a Governor, that shall rule my people Israel. https://www.kingjamesbibleonline.org/Matthew-Chapter-2/

Luke 23:38 And a superscription also was written over him in letters of Greek, and Latin, and Hebrew, THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS.

39 And one of the malefactors which were hanged railed on him, saying, If thou be Christ, save thyself and us.

40 But the other answering rebuked him, saying, Dost not thou fear God, seeing thou art in the same condemnation?

41 And we indeed justly; for we receive the due reward of our deeds: but this man hath done nothing amiss.

42 And he said unto Jesus, Lord, remember me when thou comest into thy kingdom.

John 12:12 On the next day much people that were come to the feast, when they heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem,

13 Took branches of palm trees, and went forth to meet him, and cried, Hosanna: Blessed is the King of Israel that cometh in the name of the Lord.

14 And Jesus, when he had found a young ass, sat thereon; as it is written,

15 Fear not, daughter of Sion: behold, thy King cometh, sitting on an ass's colt. https://www.kingjamesbibleonline.org/John-Chapter-12/

And what kind of Prince would he be?

Matthew 20:25 But Jesus called them unto him, and said, Ye know that the princes of the Gentiles exercise dominion over them, and they that are great exercise authority upon them.

26 But it shall not be so among you: but whosoever will be great among you, let him be your minister;

27 And whosoever will be chief (prince) among you, let him be your servant:

28 Even as the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many. https://www.kingjamesbibleonline.org/Matthew-Chapter-20/

In the book of Daniel, Christ was called chief or the first or Prince of princes.

Daniel 10:13 But the prince of the kingdom of Persia withstood me one and twenty days: but, lo, Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me; and I remained there with the kings of Persia. https://www.kingjamesbibleonline.org/Daniel-Chapter-10/

The Hebrew word for Michael means “Who is like God”.

MICHAEL H4317

מִיכָאֵל Mîykâʼêl, me-kaw-ale'; from H4310 and (the prefix derivative from) H3588and H410; who (is) like God?; Mikael, the name of an archangel and of nine Israelites:—Michael. https://www.blueletterbible.org/lang/Lexicon/Lexicon.cfm?strongs=H4317&t=KJV

The word for chief is “rishon” meaning first in place or time or rank or the beginning.

CHIEF H7223

רִאשׁוֹן riʼshôwn, ree-shone'; or רִאשֹׁן riʼshôn; from H7221; first, in place, time or rank (as adjective or noun):—ancestor, (that were) before(-time), beginning, eldest, first, fore(-father) (-most), former (thing), of old time, past. https://www.blueletterbible.org/lang/Lexicon/Lexicon.cfm?strongs=H7223&t=KJV

The word for prince can also be translated captain, or ruler or governor.

PRINCE H8269

שַׂר sar, sar; from H8323; a head person (of any rank or class):—captain (that had rule), chief (captain), general, governor, keeper, lord,(-task-)master, prince(-ipal), ruler, steward. https://www.blueletterbible.org/lang/Lexicon/Lexicon.cfm?strongs=H8269&t=KJV

And the word “one” is also used which means first.

ONE H259

אֶחָד ʼechâd, ekh-awd'; a numeral from H258; properly, united, i.e. one; or (as an ordinal) first:—a, alike, alone, altogether, and, any(-thing), apiece, a certain, (dai-) ly, each (one), eleven, every, few, first, highway, a man, once, one, only, other, some, together,

https://www.blueletterbible.org/lexicon/h259/kjv/wlc/0-1/

The sentence can be translated, “Michael who is like God, the first in rank of the princes or rulers or captains, came to help me.” In the following verse we see that Michael is Daniel’s Prince.

Daniel 10:21 But I will shew thee that which is noted in the scripture of truth: and there is none that holdeth with me in these things, but Michael your prince. https://www.kingjamesbibleonline.org/Daniel-Chapter-10/

And in Daniel 12:1 we see that he is the great Prince which standeth for the children of thy people meaning Michael is the Prince of the Jews.

Daniel 12:1 And at that time shall Michael stand up, the great prince which standeth for the children of thy people: and there shall be a time of trouble, such as never was since there was a nation even to that same time: and at that time thy people shall be delivered, every one that shall be found written in the book. https://www.kingjamesbibleonline.org/Daniel-Chapter-12/

Which brings us back to the fact that Michael is Messiah the Prince.

Daniel 9:25 Know therefore and understand, that from the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem unto the Messiah the Prince shall be seven weeks, and threescore and two weeks: the street shall be built again, and the wall, even in troublous times. https://www.kingjamesbibleonline.org/Daniel-Chapter-9/

The Hebrew word Messiah means the anointed. And in Greek, the word was translated to English as the Christ.

This word in Greek is “Christ”.

CHRIST G5547

Χριστός Christós, khris-tos'; from G5548; anointed, i.e. the Messiah, an epithet of Jesus:—Christ. https://www.blueletterbible.org/lang/Lexicon/Lexicon.cfm?strongs=G5547&t=KJV

Matthew 16:16 And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God.

As the Son of God, Jesus is the anointed God Prince of Heaven.

Hebrews 1:8 But unto the Son he saith, Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever: a sceptre of righteousness is the sceptre of thy kingdom.

9 Thou hast loved righteousness, and hated iniquity; therefore God, even thy God, hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows. https://www.kingjamesbibleonline.org/Hebrews-Chapter-1/

In Daniel 10:13 The word for “prince” can also be translated captain, or ruler or governor.

Daniel 10:13 But the prince of the kingdom of Persia withstood me one and twenty days: but, lo, Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me; and I remained there with the kings of Persia. https://www.kingjamesbibleonline.org/Daniel-Chapter-10/

PRINCE H8269

שַׂר sar, sar; from H8323; a head person (of any rank or class):—captain (that had rule), chief (captain), general, governor, keeper, lord,(-task-)master, prince(-ipal), ruler, steward. https://www.blueletterbible.org/lang/Lexicon/Lexicon.cfm?strongs=H8269&t=KJV

The same word “sar” in Hebrew is used in Joshua 5 and translated captain. The word “Sar” in Joshua 5:14 pertained to Jesus, who Joshua recognized as God, and worshipped Him. In this case Christ is seen here in battle array as the Captain of the Lord’s host and as God was to be worshipped.

Joshua 5:13 And it came to pass, when Joshua was by Jericho, that he lifted up his eyes and looked, and, behold, there stood a man over against him with his sword drawn in his hand: and Joshua went unto him, and said unto him, Art thou for us, or for our adversaries?

14 And he said, Nay; but as captain of the host of the LORD am I now come. And Joshua fell on his face to the earth, and did worship, and said unto him, What saith my lord unto his servant?

15 And the captain of the LORD'S host said unto Joshua, Loose thy shoe from off thy foot; for the place whereon thou standest is holy. And Joshua did so. https://www.kingjamesbibleonline.org/Joshua-Chapter-5/

Christ is often seen as the Mighty Man leading the armies of heaven.

Psalms 24:7 Lift up your heads, O ye gates; and be ye lift up, ye everlasting doors; and the King of glory shall come in.

8 Who is this King of glory? The LORD strong and mighty, the LORD mighty in battle.

9 Lift up your heads, O ye gates; even lift them up, ye everlasting doors; and the King of glory shall come in.

10 Who is this King of glory? The LORD of hosts, he is the King of glory. Selah. https://www.kingjamesbibleonline.org/Psalms-Chapter-24/

Isaiah 42:13 The LORD shall go forth as a mighty man, he shall stir up jealousy like a man of war: he shall cry, yea, roar; he shall prevail against his enemies. https://www.kingjamesbibleonline.org/Isaiah-Chapter-42/

Psalms 78:65 Then the Lord awaked as one out of sleep, and like a mighty man that shouteth by reason of wine.

66 And he smote his enemies in the hinder parts: he put them to a perpetual reproach.

1 Samuel 17:45 Then said David to the Philistine, Thou comest to me with a sword, and with a spear, and with a shield: but I come to thee in the name of the LORD of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom thou hast defied.

46 This day will the LORD deliver thee into mine hand; and I will smite thee, and take thine head from thee; and I will give the carcases of the host of the Philistines this day unto the fowls of the air, and to the wild beasts of the earth; that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel.

47 And all this assembly shall know that the LORD saveth not with sword and spear: for the battle is the LORD'S, and he will give you into our hands. https://www.kingjamesbibleonline.org/1-Samuel-Chapter-17/

He is often seen at the head of the armies by his name Michael the archangel.

Revelation 12:7 And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels, https://www.kingjamesbibleonline.org/Revelation-Chapter-12/

In Jude we notice that Michael is called the archangel and is again warring or contending with the devil over the body of Moses.

Jude 9 Yet Michael the archangel, when contending with the devil he disputed about the body of Moses, durst not bring against him a railing accusation, but said, The Lord rebuke thee.

The word "archangel" means "chief of the angels". Just as Christ is chief of His people on this earth, He is chief of His angels! He is the firstborn of every thing in Heaven and on earth!

He is God but He is our Servant!

Strong's Definitions: ἀρχάγγελοςarchángelos, ar-khang'-el-os; from G757 and G32; a chief angel:—archangel.

Colossians 1:13 Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son:

14 In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins:

15 Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature:

16 For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him:

17 And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.

18 And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence.

19 For it pleased the Father that in him should all fulness dwell;

20 And, having made peace through the blood of his cross, by him to reconcile all things unto himself; by him, I say, whether they be things in earth, or things in heaven. HTTPS://www.kingjamesbibleonline.org/Colossians-Chapter-1/

Philippians 2:5 Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:

6 Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God:

7 But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men:

8 And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.

9 Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name:

10 That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth;

11 And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:

6 Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God:

7 But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men:

8 And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.

9 Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name:

10 That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth;

11 And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father https://www.kingjamesbibleonline.org/Philippians-Chapter-2/

In fact, Michael the archangel, is often found acting in relation to the resurrection of the dead.

Daniel 12:1 And at that time shall Michael stand up, the great prince which standeth for the children of thy people: and there shall be a time of trouble, such as never was since there was a nation even to that same time: and at that time thy people shall be delivered, every one that shall be found written in the book.

2 And many of them that sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt.

3 And they that be wise shall shine as the brightness of the firmament; and they that turn many to righteousness as the stars for ever and ever. https://www.kingjamesbibleonline.org/Daniel-Chapter-12/

1 Thessalonians 4:13 But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope.

14 For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him.

15 For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep.

16 For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first:

17 Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord. https://www.kingjamesbibleonline.org/1-Thessalonians-Chapter-4/

Jesus Christ is the Conquering King of kings and Mighty Man. He is the Lord of Hosts (Psalms 24:7-10). To Him is committed all judgment because He became the Son of man (John 5:29). He is the Son of God and as the Son of God He knows everything. No matter how high and great the power of apostate authorities, including Satan, One higher and greater, even equal with God, bore the sin of the whole world (Philippians 2:6; Colossians 1:14-18). His righteousness, goodness and truth is infinite. All power in heaven and earth is His (Matthew 28:18). In defense of His people, as the Captain of the Lord’s host, He will war against principalities and powers and wickedness in high places (Ephesians 6:11-12; Isaiah 42:13). As Christ our righteousness, He covers all who love and trust in Him (Isaiah 59:16-18). Just as His presence in the cloud led Israel from Egypt and through the Red Sea, He will stand as a wall of fire between the enemy and His people (Exodus 13:21). He alone is their judge, for He is their Creator and Redeemer (Revelation 4-5) . He is the rewarder of all who come unto God believing in Him seeking Him (Hebrews 11:6).

John 5:25 Verily, verily, I say unto you, The hour is coming, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God: and they that hear shall live.

26 For as the Father hath life in himself; so hath he given to the Son to have life in himself;

27 And hath given him authority to execute judgment also, because he is the Son of man.

28 Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice,

29 And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation. https://www.kingjamesbibleonline.org/John-Chapter-5/

In the controversy between Christ and the forces of Satan in this world, Christ is the Mighty Man of War. It is only through His strength and by obeying His orders as our Captain that we can partake of the winning team in the battle between Christ and Satan.

Isaiah 42:13 The LORD shall go forth as a mighty man, he shall stir up jealousy like a man of war: he shall cry, yea, roar; he shall prevail against his enemies.

Revelation 6:2 And I saw, and behold a white horse: and he that sat on him had a bow; and a crown was given unto him: and he went forth conquering, and to conquer.

CHAPTER SUMMARY

To help him understand the vision (chazown), Daniel is given another vision of the appearance of the Mighty Man (mareh). Daniel 9:24-27 tell us more about this Mighty Man. In addition to the specific things the Mighty Man would accomplish in the work for our salvation, the vision also helps us to know specific time components of the seventy-week vision of Daniel 9 including the starting point during the reign of the kings of the Medes and the Persians, and the point when Christ dies on the cross. These time components help us to know the seventy-week prophecy of Daniel 9 is another “day for a year” prophecy. Furthermore, we are referred to the Messiah or Christ as the anointed Prince of Princes which points us to Him as Michael the Prince, the Mighty Warrior and Captain of the Lord’s armies, the Lord of hosts.

Jesus Christ is the Mighty Man. He is the Conquering King of kings.
