Supper of Death or Supper of Life

Updated: Nov 2, 2019

Luke 24:27And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself.

28And they drew nigh unto the village, whither they went: and he made as though he would have gone further.

29But they constrained him, saying, Abide with us: for it is toward evening, and the day is far spent. And he went in to tarry with them.

30And it came to pass, as he sat at meat with them, he took bread, and blessed it, and brake, and gave to them. https://www.kingjamesbibleonline.org/Luke-Chapter-24/

Jesus, joining two of his disciples on the road to Emmaus opens the scriptures to them regarding things concerning Himself. Even then, they still did not recognize their Master. It is interesting to note that upon their courteous and insistent invitation, He stayed to eat with them. The Bible says it was then that He took the bread and blessed it. He bestowed His divine blessing upon the bread. He broke it and gave to them. It was His gift. This is symbolic of all He had just explained and in the past three days experienced for them. See Luke 24:26 “Ought not Christ to have suffered these things and to enter his glory?”

Remember, just three days before, the very last time they had eaten with Jesus.

Luke 22: 7Then came the day of unleavened bread, when the passover must be killed.....

19And he took bread, and gave thanks, and brake it, and gave unto them, saying, This is my body which is given for you: this do in remembrance of me. https://www.kingjamesbibleonline.org/Luke-Chapter-22/

Remember, Jesus said, “I am that bread of life.” John 6:48

Remember, Jesus taught them to pray, “Give us this day our daily bread.” Matthew 6:11

Just following this experience with Jesus, the Bible says:

Luke 24:31And their eyes were opened, and they knew him; and he vanished out of their sight. https://www.kingjamesbibleonline.org/Luke-Chapter-24/

Remember Jesus had said only hours before the cross.

John 17:3And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent. https://www.kingjamesbibleonline.org/John-Chapter-17/

Oh how Christ longs for us to eat with Him. He has from the very beginning of time.

But is it possible you have been eating with the wrong host?

Genesis 3:1Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?

2And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden:

3But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die.

4And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die:

5For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.

6And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.

7And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons.

8And they heard the voice of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God amongst the trees of the garden.

9And the LORD God called unto Adam, and said unto him, Where art thou?

10And he said, I heard thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself.

11And he said, Who told thee that thou wast naked? Hast thou eaten of the tree, whereof I commanded thee that thou shouldest not eat?

The serpent’s food was and is poison opening our eyes only to our shameful condition. And it causes us to be afraid of our Creator and Dearest Friend. The serpent’s food causes us to separate from their Creator and die.

While the Bread Jesus breaks to us opens our eyes once again to Who He is. It shows us how He has suffered in our place giving us a view of His love. This view helps us to know and to trust our Creator and Dearest Friend once again and to invite our Saviour once again to brake the bread of life with us.

Luke 24:32And they said one to another, Did not our heart burn within us, while he talked with us by the way, and while he opened to us the scriptures? https://www.kingjamesbibleonline.org/Luke-Chapter-24/

Oh Friend, How He loves you and me. He gave His life. What more could He give? Let your heart burn within you as He breaks open the Scriptures to you today. EAT & LIVE!
