DANIEL 8:18 DANIEL SLEEPS THEN STANDS

Updated: Dec 17, 2022

CHAPTER 18

The humble attitude Daniel took allowed Heaven to communicate the messages of prophecy through him. Daniel understood that he was just a man, who did not always understand what God was sharing with him. But he chose to trust God and to obey. He then gave all the glory to God for the understanding and revelations he received. For those living at the close of time, understanding comes the same way. God will use those who trust and obey to communicate His messages to others.

Daniel 8:18 Now as he was speaking with me, I was in a deep sleep on my face toward the ground: but he touched me, and set me upright. https://www.kingjamesbibleonline.org/Daniel-Chapter-8/

Daniel 8:16 And I heard a man's voice between the banks of Ulai, which called, and said, Gabriel, make this man to understand the vision (mareh).

17 So he came near where I stood: and when he came, I was afraid, and fell upon my face: but he said unto me, Understand, O son of man: for at the time of the end shall be the vision (chazown).

18 Now as he was speaking with me, I was in a deep sleep on my face toward the ground: but he (Gabriel) touched me, and set me upright.

It is significant that Daniel out of fear goes from standing to falling on his face. He is in a deep sleep toward the ground when given this vision of the appearance of the Mighty Man. This also happens to Daniel in the vision of Daniel 10:9-11, and Daniel 12, which, are closely related to the vision of Daniel 8 regarding the Mighty Man and the “time of the end.”

Looking ahead at Daniel chapter 10, Daniel has another vision in the third year of Cyrus. Cyrus already has let the captives free to go back to Jerusalem to re-build the temple. Daniel understands the Daniel 8:15 vision (mareh) or appearance of the Mighty Warrior, Michael or Christ. But he also understands that the war is long (Daniel 10:1). He humbles himself to mourn, pray and to understand more (Daniel 10:2-3). At the end of three weeks of fasting and mourning Daniel receives a Revelation of Jesus Christ (Daniel 10:4-6). This is almost the same picture of Christ as John records in Revelation 1. When this happens, Daniel loses all strength and is face down asleep on the ground, just like in Daniel 8 when he sees the vision or appearance of the Mighty Man Who is also Christ Jesus. This time he knows his fear is due to his own corruption (Daniel 10:8). Daniel, though face down, asleep can still hear the words being spoken (Daniel 10:9). By degrees Daniel is helped to his feet by Gabriel. First to his hands and knees by Gabriel’s hand; Daniel is then brought to standing though trembling by Gabriel’s words to Daniel “O Daniel, a man greatly beloved, understand the words that I speak unto thee, and stand upright: for unto thee am I now sent.”(Daniel 10:10-11).

Remember, Gabriel is of the prophets and his duty is to give those he is sent to the testimony of Jesus Christ or prophecy (Revelation 19:10). Daniel is commanded to stand but these words of Gabriel also assist him to stand. This is important for us to contemplate because when we understand the testimony of Jesus Christ, it strengthens us to stand. The Spirit of Prophecy, regarding Jesus, brings life to our lifeless bodies.

Ezekiel 37:9 Then said he unto me, Prophesy unto the wind, prophesy, son of man, and say to the wind, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Come from the four winds, O breath, and breathe upon these slain, that they may live.

10 So I prophesied as he commanded me, and the breath came into them, and they lived, and stood up upon their feet, an exceeding great army. https://www.kingjamesbibleonline.org/Ezekiel-Chapter-37/

In Daniel 10:14, Gabriel tells Daniel he is there to help Daniel to understand what is going to happen to God’s people or Daniel’s people in the latter days or after the “chazown” (2300-day vision) (Daniel 10:14). When Daniel hears this, he again looks to the ground though not falling face down but becomes dumb. Signifying that Daniel cannot speak until “One like the sons of men” (Jesus Christ) touches his lips.” He must have the Divine touch and cleansing coal of heaven to be able to speak. This reminds us of the Day of Atonement experience we have when we see Jesus high and lifted up at the throne of God. We cannot be effective missionaries until we have this cleansing experience (Isaiah 6:1-8). Daniel then tells Him that he has no strength or even breath inside of him because of the vision (marah). This signifies that Daniel is unable to breathe or live again until he is strengthened. At this time, “one like the appearance of a man (Adam)” strengthen’s him. This is Gabriel who strengthens him with these words from Daniel 10:19. “O man greatly beloved, fear not: peace be unto thee, be strong, yea, be strong. And when he had spoken unto me, I was strengthened, and said, Let my lord speak; for thou hast strengthened me.Did you notice it was Gabriel’s words that strengthened Daniel? Remember, it is Gabriel’s job to speak the testimony of Jesus Christ or the words of prophecy concerning Jesus. After Daniel hears the command to be strong, he tells Gabriel he is strengthened. When Gabriel speaks again, he points Daniel to Jesus Christ or Michael, the Captain of the Lord’s hosts, and then takes Daniel in prophecy to his current day where the Medo-Persian kings were reigning and carries him in vision to the close of time to the day of resurrection.

Revelation 19:10 And I fell at his feet to worship him. And he said unto me, See thou do it not: I am thy fellowservant, and of thy brethren that have the testimony of Jesus: worship God: for the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.

Daniel 10:1 In the third year of Cyrus king of Persia a thing was revealed unto Daniel, whose name was called Belteshazzar; and the thing was true, but the time appointed (battle or war) was long: and he understood the thing, and had understanding of the vision (“mareh” or appearance of the Mighty Warrior).

2 In those days I Daniel was mourning three full weeks.

3 I ate no pleasant bread, neither came flesh nor wine in my mouth, neither did I anoint myself at all, till three whole weeks were fulfilled.

4 And in the four and twentieth day of the first month, as I was by the side of the great river, which is Hiddekel;

5 Then I lifted up mine eyes, and looked, and behold a certain man clothed in linen, whose loins were girded with fine gold of Uphaz:

6 His body also was like the beryl, and his face as the appearance of lightning, and his eyes as lamps of fire, and his arms and his feet like in colour to polished brass, and the voice of his words like the voice of a multitude.

7 And I Daniel alone saw the vision: for the men that were with me saw not the vision (“marah” or looking glasses or mirror); but a great quaking fell upon them, so that they fled to hide themselves.

8 Therefore I was left alone, and saw this great vision (marah), and there remained no strength in me: for my comeliness was turned in me into corruption, and I retained no strength.

9 Yet heard I the voice of his words: and when I heard the voice of his words, then was I in a deep sleep on my face, and my face toward the ground.

10 And, behold, an hand touched me, which set me upon my knees and upon the palms of my hands.

11 And he said unto me, O Daniel, a man greatly beloved, understand the words that I speak unto thee, and stand upright: for unto thee am I now sent. And when he had spoken this word unto me, I stood trembling.

12 Then said he unto me, Fear not, Daniel: for from the first day that thou didst set thine heart to understand, and to chasten thyself before thy God, thy words were heard, and I am come for thy words.

13 But the prince of the kingdom of Persia withstood me one and twenty days: but, lo, Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me; and I remained there with the kings of Persia.

14 Now I am come to make thee understand what shall befall thy people in the latter days: for yet the vision (chazown) is for many days.

15 And when he had spoken such words unto me, I set my face toward the ground, and I became dumb.

16 And, behold, one like the similitude of the sons of men touched my lips: then I opened my mouth, and spake, and said unto him that stood before me, O my lord, by the vision my sorrows are turned upon me, and I have retained no strength.

17 For how can the servant of this my lord talk with this my lord? for as for me, straightway there remained no strength in me, neither is there breath left in me.

18 Then there came again and touched me one like the appearance of a man, and he strengthened me,

19 And said, O man greatly beloved, fear not: peace be unto thee, be strong, yea, be strong. And when he had spoken unto me, I was strengthened, and said, Let my lord speak; for thou hast strengthened me.

20 Then said he, Knowest thou wherefore I come unto thee? and now will I return to fight with the prince of Persia: and when I am gone forth, lo, the prince of Grecia shall come.

21 But I will shew thee that which is noted in the scripture of truth: and there is none that holdeth with me in these things, but Michael your prince.

There are two visions of Christ, the “mareh” (appearance of the Mighty Man) and later in Daniel 10, the “marah” (looking glass or mirror). Both give a picture of Christ. The “mareh” leading up to the cross looking at Christ as the Mighty Man, Anointed as the Lamb of God. The “marah” looking post-cross at the roll of Christ, clothed in linen as our Anointed High Priest. Both visions of the Highest Name in all the Universe cause Daniel to lose strength and to fall into a deep sleep because of his own lack of comeliness and his own corruption. Of himself, Daniel has no ability to understand, stand, speak, or breathe. Daniel needs to be strengthened from heaven to understand and to physically stand and to speak and to live. Daniel only receives understanding of the “mareh” (Daniel 10:1). He never understands the “marah” regarding the words of the man clothed in linen, our High Priest, other than that it is fulfilled at the time of the end (Daniel 12:8). It was and is reserved for the wise to understand at the time of the end (Daniel 12:10) when Daniel would be figuratively resurrected from his rest and strengthened once again to stand in his lot (Daniel 12:13). This has happened once already. At the close of the 2300- day prophecy in 1844 God’s church (Daniel’s people) gained understanding of the 70-week prophecy and how it correlates to the 1260-day and 2300-day prophecies. But the prophecies indicate there is still more to understand. God’s people will not understand more until they have the attitude of Daniel. They must humble themselves, look at the visions and pray for understanding and the cleansing coal to be placed upon their tongues. They must abhor their own selves and give all the glory to God for understanding, speaking, standing, and breathing.

Daniel 12:4 But thou, O Daniel, shut up the words, and seal the book, even to the time of the end: many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall be increased.

5 Then I Daniel looked, and, behold, there stood other two, the one on this side of the bank of the river, and the other on that side of the bank of the river.

6 And one said to the man clothed in linen, which was upon the waters of the river, How long shall it be to the end of these wonders?

7 And I heard the man clothed in linen, which was upon the waters of the river, when he held up his right hand and his left hand unto heaven, and sware by him that liveth for ever that it shall be for a time, times, and an half; and when he shall have accomplished to scatter the power of the holy people, all these things shall be finished.

8 And I heard, but I understood not: then said I, O my Lord, what shall be the end of these things?

9 And he said, Go thy way, Daniel: for the words are closed up and sealed till the time of the end.

10 Many shall be purified, and made white, and tried; but the wicked shall do wickedly: and none of the wicked shall understand; but the wise shall understand.

11 And from the time that the daily sacrifice shall be taken away, and the abomination that maketh desolate set up, there shall be a thousand two hundred and ninety days.

12 Blessed is he that waiteth, and cometh to the thousand three hundred and five and thirty days.

13 But go thou thy way till the end be: for thou shalt rest, and stand in thy lot at the end of the days.

Daniel 8:16 And I heard a man's voice between the banks of Ulai, which called, and said, Gabriel, make this man to understand the vision.

17 So he came near where I stood: and when he came, I was afraid, and fell upon my face: but he said unto me, Understand, O son of man: for at the time of the end shall be the vision.

18 Now as he was speaking with me, I was in a deep sleep on my face toward the ground: but he touched me, and set me upright.

19 And he said, Behold, I will make thee know what shall be in the last end of the indignation: for at the time appointed the end shall be.

In each chapter of Daniel 8, 9, and 10 the understanding of Daniel comes only by Divine intervention either to Daniel or to those who will later study the book of Daniel. This time when others will understand the “chazown” is called “the time of the end” or “the end of days.”

In Revelation 10, we find the book of Daniel opened in the hands of the Mighty Man, Jesus Christ, or Michael. There are many reasons we know this is the prophetic book of Daniel which the Angel of Revelation 10 holds open.

1. It is held by Christ, pictured as the Mighty Man or Angel with power and authority over all the earth. Christ is similarly pictured in Daniel 12 as well.

Revelation 10:1 And I saw another mighty angel come down from heaven, clothed with a cloud: and a rainbow was upon his head, and his face was as it were the sun, and his feet as pillars of fire:

2 And he had in his hand a little book open: and he set his right foot upon the sea, and his left foot on the earth, https://www.kingjamesbibleonline.org/Revelation-Chapter-10/

2. The Mighty Angel of Revelation of Revelation 10 cries with a loud voice as when a lion roars indicating a revelation of prophetic significance is taking place.

Revelation 10:3 And cried with a loud voice, as when a lion roareth: and when he had cried, seven thunders uttered their voices.

3. It is a book opened which implies it used to be sealed or closed up.

4. The longest time prophecy in the Bible is the 2300-day prophecy of Daniel 8. There is no longer time related prophecy. It is constantly referred to as the “time of the end” and “latter days” etc. There is no other biblical prophecy based on a definite prophetic time that can be computed more future. This is also pointed out in Revelation 10.

Revelation 10:5 And the angel which I saw stand upon the sea and upon the earth lifted up his hand to heaven,

5. Both Daniel and Revelation 10 are about the prophetic wonders being finished. One is a book sealed but now unsealed or open; and one is a revelation.

Daniel 12:6 And one said to the man clothed in linen, which was upon the waters of the river, How long shall it be to the end of these wonders?

7 And I heard the man clothed in linen, which was upon the waters of the river, when he held up his right hand and his left hand unto heaven, and sware by him that liveth for ever that it shall be for a time, times, and an half; and when he shall have accomplished to scatter the power of the holy people, all these things shall be finished.

Revelation 10:7 But in the days of the voice of the seventh angel, when he shall begin to sound, the mystery of God should be finished, as he hath declared to his servants the prophets.

The time has come for Daniel to wake up from his sleep and to stand. The time has come for the messages of Daniel to go to world as never before. If as Daniel, those who are studying these prophecies will humble themselves, God will reveal His truth to them. Daniel had no strength, but when he chose to admit his weakness in his prayer, he received strength to hear the truth in standing.

Daniel 12:13 But go thou thy way till the end be: for thou shalt rest, and stand in thy lot at the end of the days.

https://www.kingjamesbibleonline.org/Daniel-Chapter-12/

There are many mysteries regarding the plan of salvation in the Word of God. But God’s way is simple, just trust God and obey. We need to guard against our own wisdom and self-importance and just believe what the Word of God says. There is example after example of not believing versus believing in the Word of God. Daniel trusted God’s word and obeyed. By the power of God, Daniel was given great light and great victory. God was the instructor of his servant Daniel. God speaks through whom He will. Today no human being is to take credit or glory for the work he accomplishes for God. Only God should be magnified. Oh that, like Daniel, men would give all the glory to God and go to him in prayer, asking for the Presence of His Holy Spirit and go forward to do His will as simply servants of the Most-High God.

Daniel 2:17 Then Daniel went to his house, and made the thing known to Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah, his companions:

18 That they would desire mercies of the God of heaven concerning this secret; that Daniel and his fellows should not perish with the rest of the wise men of Babylon.

19 Then was the secret revealed unto Daniel in a night vision. Then Daniel blessed the God of heaven.

20 Daniel answered and said, Blessed be the name of God for ever and ever: for wisdom and might are his:

21 And he changeth the times and the seasons: he removeth kings, and setteth up kings: he giveth wisdom unto the wise, and knowledge to them that know understanding:

22 He revealeth the deep and secret things: he knoweth what is in the darkness, and the light dwelleth with him.

23 I thank thee, and praise thee, O thou God of my fathers, who hast given me wisdom and might, and hast made known unto me now what we desired of thee: for thou hast now made known unto us the king's matter.....

27 Daniel answered in the presence of the king, and said, The secret which the king hath demanded cannot the wise men, the astrologers, the magicians, the soothsayers, shew unto the king;

28 But there is a God in heaven that revealeth secrets, and maketh known to the king Nebuchadnezzar what shall be in the latter days. Thy dream, and the visions of thy head upon thy bed, are these;

29 As for thee, O king, thy thoughts came into thy mind upon thy bed, what should come to pass hereafter: and he that revealeth secrets maketh known to thee what shall come to pass.

30 But as for me, this secret is not revealed to me for any wisdom that I have more than any living, but for their sakes that shall make known the interpretation to the king, and that thou mightest know the thoughts of thy heart.

CHAPTER SUMMARY

The humble attitude Daniel took allowed Heaven to communicate the messages of prophecy through him. Daniel understood that he was just a man, who did not always understand what God was sharing with him. But he chose to trust God and to obey. He then gave all the glory to God for the understanding and revelations he received. For those living at the close of time, understanding comes the same way. God will use those who trust and obey to communicate His messages to others.

It is significant that Daniel, out of fear, goes from standing to falling on his face.

Looking at Daniel chapter 10, Daniel has another vision in the third year of Cyrus. This time he knows his fear is due to his own corruption (Daniel 10:8) Daniel though face down, asleep can still hear the words being spoken (Daniel 10:9).

Gabriel tells Daniel he is there to help Daniel to understand what is going to happen to God’s people or Daniel’s people in the latter days or after the “chazown” (2300-day vision) (Daniel 10:14). When Gabriel speaks again, he points Daniel to Jesus Christ or Michael, the captain of the Lord’s hosts and then takes Daniel in prophecy to his current day where the Medo-Persian kings were reigning and carries him in vision to the close of time to the day of resurrection.
