DANIEL 8:16A THE MAN STANDING ON THE RIVER

Updated: Dec 17, 2022

CHAPTER 16 A

Daniel 8:16 And I heard a man's voice between the banks of Ulai, which called, and said, Gabriel, make this man to understand the vision (mareh).

Since Gabriel is the covering cherub, the only One with authority to command him would be God. This Man Who commands Gabriel is standing between the banks of the Ulai or in other words is standing on water.

BETWEEN H996

בֵּין bêyn, bane; (sometimes in the plural masculine or feminine); properly, the constructive form of an otherwise unused noun from H995; a distinction; but used only as a preposition, between (repeated before each noun, often with other particles); also as a conjunction, either...or:—among, asunder, at, between (-twixt...and), + from (the widest), × in, out of, whether (it be...or), within.

This happens one other time in Daniel 12:6-7. This time He is clothed in linen which is the clothing of the high priest on the Day of Atonement (Leviticus 16:4). In answer to the question, “How long shall it be to the end of these wonders?”, the Man clothed in linen gives the starting and ending. It would start at the conclusion of the 1260-day prophecy and be finished when the scattering of the power of the holy people, which is when the gospel has gone to the world (Matthew 24:14).

Daniel 12:6 And one said to the man clothed in linen, which was upon the waters of the river, How long shall it be to the end of these wonders?

7 And I heard the man clothed in linen, which was upon the waters of the river, when he held up his right hand and his left hand unto heaven, and sware by him that liveth for ever that it shall be for a time, times, and an half; and when he shall have accomplished to scatter the power of the holy people, all these things shall be finished.

Matthew 24:14 And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come.

https://www.kingjamesbibleonline.org/Matthew-Chapter-24/

The power refers to presence of God in the person of the Holy Spirit which gives His people the power to preach the gospel message (Matthew 28:18-20).

Matthew 28:18 And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.

19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:

20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.

A parallel example of the scattering of the power of the holy people after a three-and-a-half-year period happened after the three and a half years of apostolic ministry, following the resurrection of Christ until the death of Stephen, when the Christians were scattered by persecution and obeyed the command to take the gospel to the world, not just to the Jews (Acts 8:1).

Acts 8:1 And Saul was consenting unto his death. And at that time there was a great persecution against the church which was at Jerusalem; and they were all scattered abroad throughout the regions of Judaea and Samaria, except the apostles.

2 And devout men carried Stephen to his burial, and made great lamentation over him.

3 As for Saul, he made havock of the church, entering into every house, and haling men and women committed them to prison.

4 Therefore they that were scattered abroad went every where preaching the word.

Just as the apostolic persecution of the disciples of Christ cause a scattering of the gospel to the world to begin the work, so will persecution at the close of time cause a scattering of the gospel to the world to finish the work. This final gospel work would begin after the 1260 years of papal oppression were finished and would go on till the close of time.

Daniel 12:5 Then I Daniel looked, and, behold, there stood other two, the one on this side of the bank of the river, and the other on that side of the bank of the river.

6 And one said to the man clothed in linen, which was upon the waters of the river, How long shall it be to the end of these wonders?

7 And I heard the man clothed in linen, which was upon the waters of the river, when he held up his right hand and his left hand unto heaven, and sware by him that liveth for ever that it shall be for a time, times, and an half; and when he shall have accomplished to scatter the power of the holy people, all these things shall be finished.

But in context of Daniel 8:15, we know the Man commanding Gabriel in Daniel 8:16 is the Mighty Man. Comparing scripture with scripture, in Revelation 10, this Mighty Man, being Jesus Christ or Michael, Prince of Life and heaven and earth, has a special work to accomplish at the end of the 2300-day vision. He is clothed with a cloud just as He was when he lead Israel out of Egypt to His Holy Mountain and through the wilderness (1 Corinthians 10:1-4). He has a rainbow upon His head representing His glory or character and covenant promise not to destroy the world by another flood. (Ezekiel 1; Genesis 8). His face is as it were the sun so we can see and understand the gospel as it is in Jesus Christ (2 Corinthians 4). His feet as pillars of fire represent the fact that He walked the furnace of this earth before us. His work is the mystery of God, Christ in you, the hope of glory. That work is included in the mystery of the seven sealed thunders of Revelation 10:3-4 and is delineated and unsealed in Revelation 6-8:1 by the Lion of the tribe of Judah and the Lamb as it were slain of Revelation 5.

Revelation 10:1 And I saw another mighty angel come down from heaven, clothed with a cloud: and a rainbow was upon his head, and his face was as it were the sun, and his feet as pillars of fire:

2 And he had in his hand a little book open: and he set his right foot upon the sea, and his left foot on the earth,

3 And cried with a loud voice, as when a lion roareth: and when he had cried, seven thunders uttered their voices.

4 And when the seven thunders had uttered their voices, I was about to write: and I heard a voice from heaven saying unto me, Seal up those things which the seven thunders uttered, and write them not.

5 And the angel which I saw stand upon the sea and upon the earth lifted up his hand to heaven,

6 And sware by him that liveth for ever and ever, who created heaven, and the things that therein are, and the earth, and the things that therein are, and the sea, and the things which are therein, that there should be time no longer:

7 But in the days of the voice of the seventh angel, when he shall begin to sound, the mystery of God should be finished, as he hath declared to his servants the prophets.

Colossians 1:27 To whom God would make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you, the hope of glory:

In the gospels, when Christ is seen walking on water, His disciples have just experienced a disappointment related to the miraculous provision of Christ involved in feeding 5000 men. They thought He was going to manifest Himself as king of Israel, but instead, He sent his disciples and the fed multitude away, bitterly disappointing His disciples. That night, Jesus comes to them walking on water to assure them that He is still with them. Peter wants to walk on water also, and Christ invites him to come to him on the water but when he takes his eyes off of Jesus he begins to sink. Then just a little later He tells them in John 6 that this feeding of the 5000 provision of bread represented the spiritual Bread of Life being Himself, Jesus Christ, to be fed to the world. When the people found out the Daily Bread or Manna He wanted to provide was spiritual and not literal, some, out of disappointment stopped following Jesus. But His disciples understood and in answer to Jesus question as to whether they would still follow Him, Peter answered for them and said, “Lord, to whom shall we go? thou hast the words of eternal life.

And we believe and are sure that thou art that Christ, the Son of the living God.

It was through these faithful men, endowed with Power from on High, that Christ commenced with taking the gospel to the world.

Mark 6:44 And they that did eat of the loaves were about five thousand men.

45 And straightway he constrained his disciples to get into the ship, and to go to the other side before unto Bethsaida, while he sent away the people.

46 And when he had sent them away, he departed into a mountain to pray.

47 And when even was come, the ship was in the midst of the sea, and he alone on the land.

48 And he saw them toiling in rowing; for the wind was contrary unto them: and about the fourth watch of the night he cometh unto them, walking upon the sea, and would have passed by them.

49 But when they saw him walking upon the sea, they supposed it had been a spirit, and cried out:

50 For they all saw him, and were troubled. And immediately he talked with them, and saith unto them, Be of good cheer: it is I; be not afraid.

51 And he went up unto them into the ship; and the wind ceased: and they were sore amazed in themselves beyond measure, and wondered.

52 For they considered not the miracle of the loaves: for their heart was hardened.

John 6:14 Then those men, when they had seen the miracle that Jesus did, said, This is of a truth that prophet that should come into the world.

15 When Jesus therefore perceived that they would come and take him by force, to make him a king, he departed again into a mountain himself alone.

16 And when even was now come, his disciples went down unto the sea,

17 And entered into a ship, and went over the sea toward Capernaum. And it was now dark, and Jesus was not come to them.

18 And the sea arose by reason of a great wind that blew.

19 So when they had rowed about five and twenty or thirty furlongs, they see Jesus walking on the sea, and drawing nigh unto the ship: and they were afraid.

20 But he saith unto them, It is I; be not afraid.

21 Then they willingly received him into the ship: and immediately the ship was at the land whither they went.

Matthew 14:21 And they that had eaten were about five thousand men, beside women and children.

22 And straightway Jesus constrained his disciples to get into a ship, and to go before him unto the other side, while he sent the multitudes away.

23 And when he had sent the multitudes away, he went up into a mountain apart to pray: and when the evening was come, he was there alone.

24 But the ship was now in the midst of the sea, tossed with waves: for the wind was contrary.

25 And in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went unto them, walking on the sea.

26 And when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, It is a spirit; and they cried out for fear.

27 But straightway Jesus spake unto them, saying, Be of good cheer; it is I; be not afraid.

28 And Peter answered him and said, Lord, if it be thou, bid me come unto thee on the water.

29 And he said, Come. And when Peter was come down out of the ship, he walked on the water, to go to Jesus.

30 But when he saw the wind boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink, he cried, saying, Lord, save me.

31 And immediately Jesus stretched forth his hand, and caught him, and said unto him, O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt?

32 And when they were come into the ship, the wind ceased.

33 Then they that were in the ship came and worshipped him, saying, Of a truth thou art the Son of God.

34 And when they were gone over, they came into the land of Gennesaret.

35 And when the men of that place had knowledge of him, they sent out into all that country round about, and brought unto him all that were diseased;

36 And besought him that they might only touch the hem of his garment: and as many as touched were made perfectly whole.

John 6:66 From that time many of his disciples went back, and walked no more with him.

67 Then said Jesus unto the twelve, Will ye also go away?

68 Then Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go? thou hast the words of eternal life.

69 And we believe and are sure that thou art that Christ, the Son of the living God.

This same experience was prophesied to happen at the close of time. The people studying the prophecies of the little book of Daniel in 1844 thought Jesus was going to come and manifest Himself as King of kings to this earth. But they were bitterly disappointed when He did not come. They began to study more and saw that they had a commission to reach the Gentile world with the gospel of Jesus Christ. They must prophesy again. To learn more about the history of this event see the following link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=52LowEwp42Q

Revelation 10:8 And the voice which I heard from heaven spake unto me again, and said, Go and take the little book which is open in the hand of the angel which standeth upon the sea and upon the earth.

9 And I went unto the angel, and said unto him, Give me the little book. And he said unto me, Take it, and eat it up; and it shall make thy belly bitter, but it shall be in thy mouth sweet as honey.

10 And I took the little book out of the angel's hand, and ate it up; and it was in my mouth sweet as honey: and as soon as I had eaten it, my belly was bitter.

11 And he said unto me, Thou must prophesy again before many peoples, and nations, and tongues, and kings.

CHAPTER SUMMARY

Since Gabriel is the covering cherub, the only One with authority to command him would be God. This Man Who commands Gabriel is standing between the banks of the Ulai or in other words is standing on water.

This happens one other time in Daniel 12:6-7. This time He is clothed in linen which is the clothing of the high priest on the Day of Atonement (Leviticus 16:4).
